Vision - An Energy System based on Renewable Energy Sources
Renewable energy sources such as wind energy, solar energy and wave energy are intermittent and
stochastic in nature. To increase the share of intermittent renewable energy sources in the energy
supply, the energy production and energy consumption must be controlled and balanced in a new and
intelligent way.
This research program in Smart Energy Systems develops Model Predictive Control (MPC) technology for
balancing power supply and power demand in an economic efficient way for a system with a large number
of independent power producers and power consumers.
The power producers include
The power consumers include
Electric vehicles (the battery may be used for storing energy)
Residential heating using heat pumps
Residential heating using district heating from CHPs, geothermal heat and central heat pumps
Water tank heat storage systems
Commercial refrigeration and cooling (e.g. supermarket refrigerators and freezers)
Power consumption by industry, e.g. the process industries
