The oldest restaurant in the capital (it already existed in 1518), La
Campana is the kind of smart Sunday-best place your Roman grandmother
might take you for a treat. With its staid but timeless trattoria
decor and reliable, old-fashioned service, "The Bell" is a great place
to sample refined versions of ultra-traditional Roman dishes such as
spaghetti all'amatriciana, coda alla vacinara (braised oxtail) and
carciofi alla giudia (crispy, deep-fried artichokes). Their tiramisu
is legendary. In spring, don't miss the vignarola, a traditional Roman
vegetable and ham soup that is a rarity on restaurant
menus. Reservations are especially recommended for Sunday lunch.

In the morning and afternoon it's an old-fashioned wine shop, but come
lunchtime this historic bottiglieria, brilliantly placed
halfway between Piazza Venezia and the Pantheon, morphs into a
packed local trattoria. In a warren of barrel-vaulted rooms,
hungry office workers, tourists, local aristocrats and Vatican
apparatchiks tuck into dishes like pasta e ceci (a warming
soup of pasta and chickpeas) or pollo alla diavola (grilled
spicy chicken), washed down with the very drinkable house
white or red (if you're undecided, go for the latter - it's a
suprisingly good Morellino di Scansano from Tuscany). Should
you need something a little more serious, they have more than
300 wines by the bottle. A couple of the waitstaff speak good
English - not always a given in Rome. In December 2014, they
started to open for dinner on Thursday and Friday evenings,
when a few fish and seafood dishes join the Roman meaty
classics. Lee Marshall, Telegraph Travel's
